Prep Orchestras


Preparatory String Orchestras

Guidelines & Requirements

Auditions for the PSO are six minutes in length. Auditioning students will be required to:

1) Play a solo of their choice
2) Sight read
3) Play scales: All students should be prepared to play any two memorized scales of their own choosing, according to the following requirements:

Concert Orchestra (younger)
Violin, Viola, and Cello students must play two memorized two-octave scales (one-octave scales are not accepted).

Bass students must play one-two octave scale and another one-octave scale of their choice.

Symphonic Strings (advanced)
Violin, Viola and Cello students must play two memorized three-octave scales (Please note that playing a three-octave scale does not guarantee placement into the Prep String Symphonic Strings.)

Bass students must play two memorized two-octave scales.

Schedule & Commitment

The Prep String Orchestra is for dedicated and gifted younger string musicians not yet ready to play in the KJSO.

Prep Strings play one concert each year, and rehearse on Monday afternoons. Our Prep String Orchestra is made up of two orchestras: Prep String Concert Orchestra (for younger players) Prep String Symphonic Strings (for more advanced players)

Auditions for the Prep String Orchestra are held each summer and scheduled by appointment.

Schedule & Commitment

The KTO meets Tuesdays from 4:15-5:30 p.m. November through April in Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts’ music room. They perform two concerts per season. Participation in the KTO is 100% free of charge.


Preparatory Wind Ensemble

Guidelines & Requirements

Students must prepare the following:

1) The B-flat, E-flat, and F Concert scales in 1-2 octaves
2) A 2-octave chromatic scale of their choosing
3) As many lines of the attached excerpt page for their instrument as they feel comfortable playing:

Excerpts for the 2020-2021 season of Prep Winds are NOT yet available. Please check back in the fall.

Schedule & Commitment

The Prep Wind Orchestra is for dedicated and gifted younger wind musicians not yet ready to play in the KJSO. Prep Winds play two concerts each year, and rehearse on Monday evenings.

Auditions for the Prep Wind Orchestra are held in November and scheduled by appointment.
